RVing in Mother Earth's Playground: National Forests

We’re Dustin and Sarah, avid RVers exploring the U.S. in our 2020 Tiffin Wayfarer RW. One of our favorite aspects of RV life is discovering the boundless possibilities within our nation’s vast network of national forests and grasslands. These public lands are a playground where RVers can fully immerse themselves in nature and enjoy endless adventures.

What Are National Forests?

National forests, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, span over 193 million acres across the country. With 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands, there’s likely one waiting for you nearby. These landscapes range from majestic mountains and ancient forests to rolling grasslands and pristine rivers, each offering unique experiences for RV travelers.

Unlike national parks, which often have stricter regulations, national forests typically provide more flexibility for camping and exploration. This freedom makes them perfect for adventurous RVers. We’ve created some of our best memories boondocking in designated dispersed camping areas and enjoying outdoor activities—and now we’re sharing our favorite tips to help you turn these spaces into your personal playground.

Why RV in National Forests?

  1. Endless Exploration

National forests offer miles of trails, backroads, and hidden gems. Whether you crave the adrenaline of off-road drives or the peace of a scenic hike, there’s something for everyone.

  2. Spectacular Scenery

Imagine waking up to the sound of a babbling brook or views of snow-capped peaks. From cascading waterfalls to serene meadows, the scenery is breathtaking.

  3. Affordable Camping

National forest campgrounds are often far more budget-friendly than private RV parks, allowing you to stretch your travel budget while enjoying nature.

  4. Solitude

Unlike the crowds of national parks, national forests often provide seclusion, with remote campsites perfect for disconnecting from the world.

  5. Recreational Activities

From hiking and mountain biking to fishing, rock climbing, and rafting, these landscapes cater to adventurers of all kinds.

Activities to Try in National Forests

Trail Adventures

National forests feature extensive trails for both hikers and mountain bikers. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s a trail for you. One of our favorite memories was stumbling upon an unmarked turquoise waterfall in the San Juan National Forest—a hidden gem we’ll never forget.

Packrafting

Packrafting combines lightweight, inflatable rafts with backcountry exploration. We’ve paddled tranquil alpine lakes, hidden caves, and thrilling rapids, all while enjoying wildlife like bald eagles and moose.

Foraging

Learning to identify edible plants and mushrooms adds depth to our outdoor experiences. Foraging responsibly fosters a deeper connection to nature while enriching your culinary adventures (wild raspberries are a favorite!). Always research what’s safe before consuming anything.

Rock Hounding

For those intrigued by geology, national forests are full of hidden treasures like quartz and rare minerals. While we recommend leaving nature as you found it, the thrill of discovery makes hikes even more exciting.

Photography

National forests are ideal for honing photography skills offering unspoiled landscapes and wildlife encounters. One unforgettable moment for us was capturing two moose at sunset while camping in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest.

Scenic Drives

Explore breathtaking routes like the San Juan Skyway, which winds through towering peaks and historic towns. For off-road enthusiasts, many forests have designated trails accessible by OHVs or equipped RVs.

Cultural Landmarks

Hidden within many national forests are historical and cultural sites, like Chimney Rock National Monument in Colorado, where we explored the remnants of ancient Puebloan civilization.

Campfires and Grilling

Nothing beats the ambiance of a campfire under star-filled skies. We love grilling fresh, local ingredients and reflecting on the day’s adventures while reconnecting with the natural world.

Class C Motorhomes

Class C motorhomes offer outdoor experiences for larger families at a lower price point than Class A Motorcoaches. Recognizable by their raised sleeping or storage areas which extend over the cab of the RV, Class C Motorhomes offer more living space than Class B Motorhomes but are smaller in size and can offer better gas mileage than Class A Motorcoaches.
