The Search for Our Next RV

Expanding Our RV Journey

As we wrapped up our sixth year of RV life in our third RV, that all-too-familiar itch began to surface—the kind that sends you spiraling down YouTube rabbit holes, binge-watching videos of new RV models and layouts.

We loved our trusty Class B van, Vincent Van-Go (or Vinnie, as we affectionately call him), but as our needs changed over the years, we began to crave an RV that would offer more living space without sacrificing drivability. After countless hours of research, RV shows, and dealership visits, we finally found our next home on wheels: a 2021 Thor Motor Coach Delano 24RW.

Here’s a look at our search process from beginning to end, what led us to choose our new RV, and what our plans are for Vinnie, our camper van.

Our Tried-and-True RV Search Process

Step 1: Make a Features and Priorities List

We started our search with a clear list of features and priorities. While we loved the compact size and maneuverability of our Class B campervan, we knew that for our next RV, we wanted something slightly larger but still easy to drive. We set our sights on a small Class C motorhome, specifically something under 28 feet long. Our main goals were:

  • More space: We wanted an RV with slide-outs to make the living area more spacious when parked.
  • Sleeping room for more people: Vinnie is perfect for two, but we wanted the ability to comfortably sleep one or two additional people in case we had guests or family join us.
  • Access to key areas: It was important to us that we could still access most of the RV’s amenities (like the kitchen and bathroom) without having to open the slides every time we stopped.
  • Van chassis: We loved the smooth drive and compact nature of a van chassis, so ideally, we wanted to stick with that platform. That led us to focus on RVs built on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis.

Step 2: Research In-Person and Online

RV Shows and Dealership Visits

Our RV search began by attending multiple RV shows, which we highly recommend if you’re in the market for a new RV. These shows are great for walking through a wide variety of models, floorplans, and sizes all in one place.

We spent time getting a feel for different Class C models and narrowed down what worked for us. RV shows give you that hands-on experience, which is key when you’re imagining how your life will look inside a new RV.

Next, we hit the road and visited several RV dealerships. Talking to the salespeople and exploring different options in person helped solidify what we did and did not want.

Scouring RV Listings Online

After the RV shows, we turned to the internet to continue our search. We spent countless hours browsing RV listings online, with RVTrader.com becoming one of our go-to resources.

The website features an extensive selection of RVs—both new and used—from private sellers and dealerships alike. This allowed us to find models that suited our needs and compare prices nationwide with ease.

We looked for those small Class C RVs on a van chassis—often referred to by long-time RVers as B+ models—focusing on Thor Motor Coach, Jayco, and Entegra Coach since we knew we wanted to stay within the THOR Industries family of companies

Step 3: Schedule RV Inspections

As we found options that met our criteria, we scheduled inspections. Hiring a professional RV technician to thoroughly inspect used models saved us from buying an RV with hidden issues from a private seller. After eliminating a couple of options due to inspection results, we were left with a few solid contenders.

The Decision: Our 2021 Thor Motor Coach Delano 24RW

After months of research and multiple RV visits, we found “the one” at General RV in Utah: the 2021 Thor Motor Coach Delano 24RW.

The Delano Class C Motorhome Checked All Our Boxes

  • It’s built on a Mercedes chassis, giving us the drivability and comfort we wanted, and it has slide-outs that expand the living space without making it feel like we’re driving a giant rig.
  • At just under 26 feet, it offers more space than Vinnie but still fits comfortably into campgrounds, parking spaces, and the more scenic, remote locations we love to visit.
  • The Delano has a versatile floor plan that allows for extra sleeping space, perfect for when friends or family join us on our adventures.
  • Plus, we can access most of the RV’s key areas without opening the slides, which is a huge convenience during quick overnight stops.

Financing Our New RV

Like many RV buyers, we opted to finance our purchase. Buying an RV is a significant investment, and financing allowed us to get the motorhome we wanted without stretching our budget too thin.

We shopped around for the best loan options and found terms that worked for us. Financing an RV can be a bit like financing a house or car, so it’s important to compare rates and terms to find the best deal.

What’s Next for Vinnie?

Vinnie has been such a big part of our lives, and while we’re excited about our new Delano, parting ways with Vinnie won’t be easy. We initially tried to rent Vinnie through a local rental company back in Utah, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, I (Gabe) had to fly back to Salt Lake City, pick him up, and drive him across the country back to North Carolina. It was an unexpected road trip but a fun reminder of all the great times we’ve had with Vinnie.

Now, we’re considering either renting him out ourselves or selling him if we find the right buyer—someone who will enjoy him as much as we have. Vinnie is a fantastic Class B van, and while we’re moving on to something bigger, he’ll always have a special place in our hearts. Whether we decide to rent or sell, it’s going to be a very emotional day when we finally say goodbye.

Class C Motorhomes

Class C motorhomes offer outdoor experiences for larger families at a lower price point than Class A Motorcoaches. Recognizable by their raised sleeping or storage areas which extend over the cab of the RV, Class C Motorhomes offer more living space than Class B Motorhomes but are smaller in size and can offer better gas mileage than Class A Motorcoaches.
